The former prime minister of Thailand, whose party suffered a resounding defeat in th June 2011 election, reported his assets increased by three million baht during more than two years in office, to 54 million baht, the commission said. Abhisit was the 27th Prime Minister of Thailand from 2008 to 2011 and is the current leader of the Democrat Party. As leader of the second largest party in the House of Representatives, he is also Leader of the Opposition – a position he last held in December 2008. He was born on 3 August 1964 in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. He attended Eton College (where he was known as “Veggie” amongst his peers), and earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics (PPE), first class honors, and a master’s degree in economics from St John’s College, Oxford. He also received a bachelor’s degree in law from Thailand’s Ramkhamhaeng University, and taught at Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy and Thammasat University Faculty of Economics. He is fluent in both his mother tongue and the English language, and has dual Thai and British citizenship. He is ethnically Han Chinese of Hakka origin. He is married to Dr. Pimpen Sakuntabhai, his classmate at the Chulalongkorn University Demonstration elementary school, who was a former dentist and is now a lecturer at the Department of Mathematics at Chulalongkorn University. They have two children.
