It’s not a stretch to say that the Twilight Saga has been very popular all over the world. The series of books conceptualized and written by Stephanie Meyer has become a very profitable movie franchise. It even has inspired a massive cult following of fans that likes to call their group as “Twihards.”
The premise of the Twilight Saga revolves around the unlikely love story of an ordinary girl and an immortal vampire. It has similar elements with the complicated and conflicted love story of Romeo and Juliet. The girl’s name is Bella Swan and the actress Kristen Stewart portrays her. The vampire is Edward Cullen and the actor Robert Pattinson breathes life to his role. As the story progresses, Bella became entrenched in a love triangle with the werewolf Jacob Black who is played by actor Taylor Lautner.
Apart from the fantasy and mystical elements of the film, the Twilight Saga became immensely popular because of its romantic story. It has earned millions of dollars from its global box office sales.
- Twilight (2008): $392.6 million
- The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009): $709.8 million
- The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010): $698.5 million
- The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011): $705.1 million
With this commercial success, the major stars of the Twilight Saga became among the richest celebrities in Hollywood. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner became hot teen idols that made them powerful brand ambassadors.
Kristen Stewart: The Highest Earning Actress in Hollywood
As early as 2010, Kristen Stewart has already clinched the top spot of the celebrity pay scale according to Vanity Fair. Her estimated net worth of $55 million was boosted with her 2010 earnings of $28.5 million, easily besting Jennifer Aniston’s $24.5 million and Angelina Jolie’s $23.5 million. Between May 2010 and May 2011, Stewart’s estimated earnings were pegged at $20 million.
Without the Twilight Saga, Kristen Stewart’s acting career was not as financially successful. Her 2010 film “The Runaways” only earned $4.6 million globally.
But Stewart has slowly proved that she can carry a movie franchise without any association to Twilight. This 2012, she became the lead role in the movie Snow White and the Huntsman alongside Thor star Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. The movie earned $56.1 million domestically and $95.4 million globally. These box office sales were not bad for a non-Twilight film, proving that Stewart can become a viable investment for a lead role in a film.
Stewart received $12.5 million for each appearance in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn films. On top of this, Stewart has negotiated $2.5% of the gross of each film. This is a lot of money that is a far cry from the $2 million she received for the first Twilight film in 2008.
Robert Pattinson/Edward Cullen: The Vampire with the Shiny Purse
Robert Pattinson makes the hearts of many young girls melt with his shiny presence as the charming vampire in the Twilight Saga. His net worth is pegged at $60 million and his annual salary is said to hover in the range of $25 million.
Pattinson has also negotiated a percentage of the total revenues of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn films. He stands to earn around $40 million from its gross revenues.
Pattinson has previous film roles prior to his part as Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga. He has appeared in the movies Vanity Fair, Ring of the Nibelungs and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as Cedric Diggory.
Taylor Lautner/Jacob Black: The Werewolf with Appeal
Lautner has just breached the 20-year old mark but he already has $40 million in his net worth. When he first appeared in the 2008 film Twilight, he earned a million dollars. This increased with the 2009 film “The Twilight Saga: New Moon with $4 million.
As his role grew, he received $7.5 million and 2.5% of the profits of the film The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Now that he is an integral part of the story as part of a love triangle, he upped his salary to $12.5 million for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn films. He is now at par with the salaries of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
In 2011, Lautner also starred in his own film entitled Abduction. He earned $7.5 million for his lead role in the action thriller.
Plans for a Billion Dollars with “Breaking Dawn”
The producers of The Twilight Saga have grand plans for their movie franchise now that it is coming to a close with “Breaking Dawn.” They divided it to two films in the same way that Harry Potter produced two films for its epic conclusion “Deathly Hallows.” The rationale behind this move is to please Twihards who have clamored a faithful interpretation and translation of the book into the movie.
Movie experts have estimated that the Breaking Dawn films must earn $650 million globally to reach the target profit range of $228 million. The best-case scenario for the producers would be to generate $1.2 billion in revenues and $447 million in profits for both the studio and the investors.
This is not a farfetched idea because the last two Twilight movies earned $700 million globally.
When the profits are this high, the three major stars namely Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner will likely earn $25 million as a result of the 2.5% share they negotiated for each Breaking Dawn film. The studio behind the Twilight Saga has neither confirmed nor denied the report about the revenue shares of their three major stars.
Summit, the studio behind the Twilight movies, is anticipating that Breaking Dawn Part 1 will earn $611 million for its first cycle revenue and $228 in profits. The first cycle includes money earned from theater runs, broadcast television, merchandising and disc sales.
Breaking Dawn Part 1 was expected to make between $125 million to $140 million this weekend domestically. More earnings were anticipated from fifty international markets including the United Kingdom, France and even South Africa.
