Whether he’s scoring hat-tricks or shouting at TV cameras, football stars don’t come much bigger than Wayne Rooney.

Playing for Everton, Manchester United and England, he’s contributed countless moments of sporting magic down the years, and generated plenty of column inches with his off-pitch exploits too.

These days, Wayne is joined on his high-profile pedestal by his wife Coleen. Together, the footballer and his celebrity wife have plenty of disposable income to lavish on fantastic cars and that’s what we’re interested in here.

Ford SportKa

Back in his days as an Everton wonder kid, Wayne Rooney had a less elaborate taste in cars. A sponsorship deal landed him this SportKa shortly after he passed his driving test in August 2003.

It might be small and modestly priced, but for sheer driver enjoyment the little Ford city car can rival some of the supercars and SUVs Wayne would come to own later in life.

The SportKa was the quickest version of the original Ford Ka with a lively 94hp 1.6-litre engine and pin-sharp responses.

BMW X5

Coleen McLoughlin, the future Mrs Rooney, is pictured here with her X5 in 2004. The big BMW did much to popularise the luxury SUV segment with its focus on on-road driving dynamics at the expense of off-road ability.

You wouldn’t necessarily want to point this 4×4 across a ploughed field but on tarmac, it served up a driving experience that put contemporaries in the shade.

When the European crop of sports utility vehicles don’t have quite enough size or road presence, many footballers take the American option.

Cadillac’s enormous Escalade could never be accused of being lacking in either department and in 2004 Wayne was the proud owner of one.

BMW X3

Coleen and Wayne have owned their fair share of huge luxury SUVs but here’s Miss McLoughlin in 2003 climbing aboard something more bijou.

The BMW X3 is a manageable size compared to its X5 big brother and less expensive too – not that the girlfriend of an England international footballer would be too worried about the price tag.

Chrysler 300C

When word got around that the Chrysler 300C had engine and underpinnings lifted from the old Mercedes E-Class, it gained something of a cult following. Big, bold and very affordable, it became a rare UK market success story for Chrysler.

That wealthy footballer’s WAG Coleen McLoughlin was one of those who hopped aboard the 300C’s value-for-money bandwagon seems a little strange but here she is in 2005 filling one up.

Would Wayne want to be seen driving a Ford StreetKa today?

We think it’s unlikely, but back in 2003 the teenage Rooney was only too happy to sign a sponsorship deal with Ford and take delivery of the Blue Oval’s cutest little convertible. Here he is picking girlfriend Coleen up in that very car.

Aston Martin Vanquish S

Back in 2006, Wayne displayed a soft spot for British supercars when he splashed out on an Aston Martin Vanquish S.

Unveiled in 2004, the S was a beefed-up version of the standard Vanquish with tweaked styling, a more aggressive setup and extra power.

With 514bhp and a 204mph top speed, this Aston is very quick while its sinewy curves and raucous V12 acoustics add to the sense of occasion. The car originally retailed at over £175,000.

Mercedes-Benz SLK

Coleen is a girl who likes to shop so the Mercedes-Benz SLK is a slightly unusual choice of car. The sleek two-seater roadster boasts a folding hard-top roof and a boot that even an estate agent would call tiny. Space for designer shopping bags is severely limited.

Range Rover Overfinch

When a standard Range Rover isn’t quite enough, the rich and famous often ask car modifiers Overfinch to bring on the bling.

This is Wayne with a heavily upgraded Overfinch Range Rover, which was probably equipped to his own specifications. We have to agree it’s a head-turner but off-road drivers will shudder at the sight of those side steps. They’re playing havoc with the Rangie’s ground clearance.

Mercedes-Benz CLK Cabriolet

In 2000 lorry drivers protesting against high fuel prices blockaded oil refineries and nearly brought the country to a standstill.

In July 2005, rumours of similar protests leading to fuel shortages prompted panic buying and thousands of motorists were inconvenienced. The disgruntled masses included Coleen who had to queue for more than 30 minutes to get fuel for her Mercedes CLK Cabriolet.

BMW X5

On the evidence of this gallery, Coleen is a big fan of BMW products. This is her emerging from a blue X5 in 2005.

It’s not just any X5 either, this powerful 4.8-litre S model was the range-topping variant at the time with an asking price of close to £63,000.

Mercedes-Benz Viano

When you’ve got a lot of people to move but don’t want to lower the tone with a full-blown minibus, the Mercedes-Benz Viano is about as good as it gets.

Wayne Rooney employed the services of one to transport his wife Coleen and their new-born son Kai home from hospital in 2009.

This is Wayne in 2008 arriving in Wythenshawe, one of Manchester’s toughest housing estates. He’s there to film his Street Striker TV series for Sky One and he’s driving a Mercedes CL 63 AMG worth over £120,000.

The 518hp Merc, seems to be attracting plenty of attention.

Range Rover Overfinch

This shot shows Rooney exiting Manchester United’s Carrington training ground in 2010 at the wheel of a silver Overfinch Range Rover.

Despite the support of Wayne and other notable footballers like Steven Gerrard, sadly Overfinch went into administration in November 2010.
